Returning after a week off, the Texas State Men’s and Women’s track and field teams dominated in the New Mexico Team Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jan. 27.
The Bobcats completed in their first event of the day, which was the women’s weight throw with junior thrower Sidnee Land finishing in third and junior thrower Melanie Rusch in eighth.
The Bobcats scored 18 points in women’s high jump. Senior jumper Chelsie Decoud had a season best of 1.80m, great for second. Senior high jumper Courtney Johnson placed third and high jump and junior Raquel Robinson in fifth.
In men’s 60-meter hurdles prelims, multis sophomore Ben Collerton ended with 8.35 and steep chaser sophomore Christian Jackson with 8.47 to advance to finals. Each were seasonal bests.
In the women’s 60-meter hurdles, multis junior Kylah Smith ended with 8.55 and freshman hurdler Whitney Ochiam with 8.80 to advance to the final. Smith also had the top prelim time which betters her conference leading mark.
In the men’s 60-meter dash, junior multis Carlos Wilson finished with 6.81 and freshman sprinter Jaylen Allen with 7.0 to advance to finals.
Junior sprinter Tramesha Hardy also advanced to the final in the women’s 60-meter dash in 7.50.
Freshman distance runner Cade Michael scores for the Bobcats in the men’s mile, finishing in eighth. Junior thrower Sam Hussy scored for the Bobcats in the men’s weight throw, ending in eighth.
Bobcats scored 16 points, with freshman jumper Carlos Wilson in second, multis sophomore Ben Collerton in fourth and freshman jumper Ronnie Briscoe in sixth in men’s long jump.
Junior sprinter Tramesha Hardy runs 7.43 in the final to finish second overall. Hardy has the Sun Belt Conference leading mark in the 60-meter dash.
Wilson (fourth) and Jaylen Allen (sixth) scored in the men’s 60-meter final. In the men’s 800-meter run, Bobcats scored eight more points. Senior sprinter Esther Oyetunde ran 2:13.05 in the women’s 800-meter run, which was great for six points and third amongst collegiate athletes in the race.
The Bobcats scored four more points in the women’s triple jump with senior jumper Mylana Hearn winning the event and Raquel Robinson finishing in fifth. Hearn had another big leap this season — 12.93m. The jump improves her Sun Belt leading Mark and also has her 15th in Division 1.
In the women’s 3000-meter run, sophomore distance runner Devina Schneider finished in second with freshman distance runner McKynzie King in fourth, giving the Bobcats another 13 points. The Bobcats hold a strong lead going into the 4×4 with 15.5 points ahead of San Diego State.
The Bobcat Women won the New Mexico Team Invitational after defeating the 4×400-meter relay.
The Men’s shot putters ended big, scoring 18 team points in the final scored event off the day. Ending with 100 points, the Men’s team overall placed second.
Track and field will continue its season in Birmingham, Alabama at Birmingham Crossplex for the Jaguar Invitational Feb. 4 and the Sun Belt Indoor Championships Feb. 18-19.
