A generator failure on Feb. 18 at the City of San Marcos’ Main Wastewater Lift Station resulted in untreated wastewater being discharged into the San Marcos River. 
The lift station, located near River Road and the IH-35 Frontage Road, moves sewage to the treatment plant. According to the city, approximately 1 million gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into the river.
The city says the city water supply was not affected by the spill and that it corrected the issue. As of Feb. 19, the treatment plant is operating normally.
The overflow occurred at the piping area next to the San Marcos River. Downstream utilities and the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) have been notified.
The city is asking residents using private drinking water supply wells within 1/2 mile of the spill site to only use water that has been distilled or boiled and for all persons to avoid contact with waste material, soil or water affected by the spill. The city already has a city-wide boil water advisory in effect after a drop in water pressure within the distribution system.
