UPDATE: February 16, 1:30 p.m.
Police arrested Martin Garcia Jr. and James Lee Zapata Friday evening in Austin on a charge of murdering Texas State student Aaron “Jack” Peterman. SMPD was assisted by the Austin Police Department Violent Crimes Task Force and the Texas Rangers.
Garcia and Zapata were identified as suspects by residents late Friday morning. Both were charged with capital murder and are currently being held in Hays County Jail. They are to appear in front of a judge Saturday to have their bond set.
The investigation is still ongoing as police try to understand the nature and motive behind the crime. At this time, it is believed to be a drug-related robbery and homicide.
Aaron “Jack” Peterman, exploratory freshman, was found dead in his Park North Condos apartment from a single gunshot wound Wednesday morning by a family member.
Police responded to the family member’s call at around 7:30 a.m. and assisted San Marcos Emergency Medical Services. Peterman was declared dead at the scene by Justice of Peace Scott Cary, who had no comment. Peterman was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
Police believe the murder is the result of a robbery-homicide, but the case is still an ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to contact the San Marcos Police Department non-emergency line at 512.753.2108 or the Criminal Investigations Division at 512.753.230.
