The Bobcats came away from a home series with a sweep over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, to push Texas State’s record to 6-4 on the season.
Game one saw the Bobcats open up the weekend series with a big 13-0 shutout win. Everyone in the lineup saw action, but it was Luke Sherley, senior shortstop, who stole the spotlight with his first home run of his senior season.
“I was trying to hit a ball back up the middle, and I got my arms extended when I took a swing on it,” Sherley said. “As far as the win, it was a great team win. We had great pitching and great defense. We had a lot of things build our confidence tonight.”
Sherley also noted the improved bullpen.
“I thought the last couple games our bullpen has been big,” Sherley said. “They’ve gone out there and done what they need to do, throwing strikes and pitching with a lead, and I was really impressed tonight.”
Game two opened up with some solid pitching from Connor Reich, junior pitcher, as he finished the day with six strikeouts and a no hitter through five innings. The game was postponed, however, due to a weather delay after the bottom of the fifth inning. Rain was not too much of a downpour, but the constant precipitation was enough to warrant the game being postponed until the following day, making game three a near-double header. The game concluded the following day with a 6-3 score in favor of the Bobcats.
In game three, the Bobcats were going for the sweep, but early on, it was not looking good for the home team. The Bobcats fell behind early 4-1, but the team kept chipping away little by little to the lead, and by the time the Bobcats were down to their last outs of the game, Dylan Paul, senior outfielder, hit an RBI-triple, and was able to score from third base on an error by Stephen F. Austin to seal the first sweep of the season for the Bobcats.
“I knew I got a lot of (the ball) and honestly thought it had a chance (to go out), but I was getting around the bases just in case, and sure enough a mistake was made, and I took the best of it,” Paul said. “We needed this sweep. We are a really, really good team. Our record is ok, but I think we are much better than our record says we are. We still have guys figuring stuff out and we are still doing alright. Once we all get going together we are going to be pretty scary.”
The Bobcats will be back in action Tuesday, March 6, as they host Rice University at 6:30 pm.
