University President Denise Trauth said in statement: “Khambrail was a student-athlete in the football program at Texas State and his sudden death will be felt throughout the university community.  Our deepest sympathies go to Khambrail’s family and loved ones, including his teammates and coaches.”
“Khambrail’s death is part of an ongoing San Marcos Police Department investigation into an event that occurred off-campus last night. San Marcos Police Department has informed us that they do not believe there is any ongoing danger to our university community.”
“I know that this is very difficult news. Please find comfort in your friends and family and take advantage of the counseling center resources that we have at Texas State.”

The City of San Marcos confirmed the death of Texas State football player Khambrail Winters following a Nov. 24 shooting at The Lodge Apartments. 
Next of kin have been notified. Police responded to the apartment at 1975 Aquarena Springs Dr. for calls of gunshots and people running from the area. When officers arrived, they found Winters with a gunshot wound in the chest and immediately began lifesaving efforts but were unsuccessful. 
Police say the incident involved Winters, 20, Enalisa Briana Blackman, 20, and Michael Tyreek Ifeanacho, 20. During the incident, Winters was shot and killed.
Both Blackman and Ifeanacho were arrested, charged with capital murder and are being held in the Hays County Jail.
The investigation is currently ongoing. SMPD is seeking to identify the two other individuals involved in the shooting and any other witnesses to the murder. 
Winters, a criminal justice major and sophomore defensive back, was nursing a torn ACL and had been out for the remainder of the year. He was recognized by Sun Belt Conference coaches as a 2019 Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt Conference.
Head Football Coach Jake Spavital released the following statement: “Our Texas State University football team is deeply saddened by the death of our team member, and friend, Khambrail Winters. I met with players this morning to share the news about Khambrail. We will stand together as a team and support one another during this very difficult time. Our thoughts and condolences are with Khambrail’s family and loved ones.”
“We are waiting for more details to be released before we can comment further.  The coaches and I are meeting with the team to discuss how we will proceed for the rest of the week,” Spavital said.
This is the third homicide of 2020 in San Marcos.
