After closing the regular season on a seven-game win streak, the Texas State Bobcats reached the end of their 2017 season with a 2-1 loss to Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Nov. 1
The No. 2 seed closed out their campaign in the Sun Belt Conference tournment quarterfinals. The loss came in heartbreaking fashion after several unlucky bounces led to the Chanticleers’ game-winning goal.
The Bobcats came out with an aggressive approach, taking an early lead over Coastal Carolina. Senior forward Kassi Hormuth struck first for Texas State, scoring a goal in the fourth minute and giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead over the Chanticleers.
The first half goal was the senior’s eighth on the season, tying fellow teammate, senior midfielder Rachel Grout for the most goals on the team.
Unable to keep up their offensive attack, the Bobcats settled in on defense, holding Coastal Carolina scoreless in the first half.
The Texas State defense held off the Chanticleers early in the second half before a goal early in the 70th minute. Coastal Carolina tied the game 1-1 off a goal from Chanticleer Lauren Dabner.
With both teams unable to take the upper hand for the rest of the half, the score remained tied at the end of regulation, setting up an overtime showdown.
The first overtime period of the game saw more of the same with both teams unable to score. To break the tie and grab the win, senior midfielder Alyssa Phelan fired off a shot with 10 seconds left, but couldn’t convert the shot attempt.
The game continued into the second overtime period. Breaking the tie, Coastal Carolina’s Mackenzie Gibbs scored the game winning goal, eliminating the Bobcats from the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
Sophomore goalkeeper, Heather Martin had six saves in the game, upping her season total to 60 and her career total to 121, good for sixth overall in school history.
