The Texas State women’s basketball team suffered a 65-58 defeat at the hands of Sun Belt Conference rivals the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Saturday, Jan. 20.
The loss comes only days after a 34-point blowout victory against ULM and moves the Bobcats to 12-7 for the season.
The Bobcat offense that scored 86 points in the previous game stalled as the Bobcats struggled to make their shots, going 21-68 (30.9) on the afternoon.
Texas State struck the first blow with an opening triple from sophomore guard Brooke Holle but found themselves trailing by three after the first quarter of play.
The Bobcats kept it a close affair in the second quarter but couldn’t duplicate their normal offensive attack. Texas State closed the half down eight to the Ragin’ Cajuns.
Continuing their struggles in the third quarter, the Bobcats allowed Louisiana to lead by as many as 13 points.
It was in the fourth quarter that the Texas State offense began to pick up steam as the team went on a run that brought them within five points of Louisiana. Within five points was the closest the Bobcats would get for the rest of the game.
Despite a losing effort, senior guard Taeler Deer led Texas State in scoring with 20 points. The senior guard played 36 minutes and added four assists, one block and one steal to round out her night.
Following Deer was junior sharpshooter Toshua Leavitt. Leavitt scored 13 points but was 3-13 from behind the three-point line.
Holle who scored the first points of the game posted nine points, an assist, a steal and a block in 32 minutes on the floor. This was the sophomore’s second game back after missing some time with the team.
Up next for the Bobcats is a visit to Statesboro, Georgia for a showdown with the Georgia Southern University Eagles Jan. 25 at 4 p.m.
