The Texas State baseball team dropped to 13-5-1 overall after a 2-7 loss to the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners March 20. The Bobcats were aiming to pull off a win to set up the season sweep later in the year.
Before their loss, Texas State was riding the momentum an eleven-game win streak. The Bobcats still have one more game against the roadrunners to serve as the tie breaker April 3.
The Bobcats fell behind early, giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and falling behind by four runs through the first two innings.
Unable to respond to the Roadrunner’s offense, the Bobcats failed to close the deficit, posting just one run in the fourth inning off a wild pitch, and another run in the fifth, courtesy of a fielding error by the Roadrunners.
Dylan Paul, senior utility, and Jonathan Ortega, junior infielder, both recorded two hits in the game, but were unable to make up for Bobcats errors. Jaylen Hubbard, junior infielder, Jared Huber, senior catcher, and power hitter Derek Scheible, senior outfielder, each recorded an error.
Starting pitcher Brandon Lewis, junior, recorded the loss, falling to 0-2 for the season. Lewis went two innings, while allowing four hits on four runs, and recording just one strikeout on the night.
The bullpen, a key factor in the Bobcats win streak, struggled throughout the game. The three relief pitchers, Broc Bosse, sophomore, Kyle Bradford, junior, and Noah Walker, freshman, combined for five hits and three runs.
Up next for the Bobcats is a matchup against The University of The Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark March 21 followed by a three-game series against Sun Belt Conference rival the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
