Sixty-five students were in isolation/quarantine spaces provided by Texas State at one point in September, the university’s Student Health Center director announced in an email to faculty, staff and students.
As of Oct. 6, that number has decreased to 13, Dr. Emilio Carranco stated in the email. According to the email, 1,074 PCR COVID-19 tests were performed at its mobile, on-campus testing side (18 positive results), contact tracers have increased from eight to 18 and there have been instances of roommate transmission in the residence halls.
According to Texas State, there is no evidence of transmission in classrooms or “across” residence halls. The university is only aware of cases identified at the mobile testing site and those reported to its web application, Bobcat Trace.
“Much of the transmission we are seeing now is driven by exposure during social gatherings,” Carranco said in the email.
The update comes nearly a month after Texas State, following recommendations from national health officials, announced it would no longer allow students to have visitors in their dorm rooms. The university also said it was seeking additional spaces on campus for students to self-isolate and quarantine.
After a Reddit post surfaced about Texas State placing students diagnosed with COVID-19 on a campus dorm floor, the university responded Aug. 27 saying it created space in dorms for students in quarantine, not those who tested positive.
An individual goes into quarantine when she, he or they may have been exposed to COVID-19 but is not showing symptoms, while isolation happens when someone diagnosed is separated from others.
The university continues to update its COVID-19 dashboard Monday through Friday. University numbers only include cases identified at the mobile testing site and those reported to Bobcat Trace.
