In one of the largest conservative events held on campus, Turning Point USA leaders rallied for the principles of freedom, free markets, and limited government as early voting across the state continues.
Amidst flyers on every seat promoting messages such as “big government sucks,” “#resistsocialism,” and “America is the best country on earth,” the event attracted around 300 people to the Alkek Teaching Theatre. TPUSA Founder Charlie Kirk and Communications Director Candace Owens touched upon several topics including the leftist agenda of public institutions, the non-existing gender pay gap and radical feminism shaming women who want to raise children.
“By no means of force, the top five majors in America that are the top five highest potential earnings (…) are almost 90 percent male dominated,” Kirk said. “The five lowest (…) are almost 90 percent female. No one is forcing (people what major they should pick).”
Kirk said black America is the U.S’ greatest untapped resource and Owens followed by stating the left is pushing a victim mentality on minorities.
“I want to break this illusion (that) because someone is black, they care about blacks,” Owens said. “ Because someone is a woman, they care about women. I want someone who cares about American people.”
When asked about former Student Government President Brooklyn Boreing resigning amid TPUSA allegations, Kirk adamantly refused to discuss the topic. Owens said she has never heard of the TPUSA victory list, which has Texas State listed.
Daniel Losoya, a nursing junior and veteran, said he came to the event to find a community similar to the one he experienced in the military. Losoya, a huge fan of Owens, described civilian life as extremely isolated with a heavy lack of support for traditional values.
“(On campus), it’s not like (the military). Most campuses alienate and attack those who have different opinions,” Losoya said. “(We need to focus) on old values where we care about our neighbors and we are responsible people.”
Chad West, communication studies junior, found out about the event after receiving a flyer on the Quad and attended in hopes of seeing Owens and Kirk talk about their views surrounding socialism.
“I know they have strong opinions on that, and I agree on everything that they are saying (regarding socialism),” West said. “ I like they way they put it compared to groups like Ben Shapiro or the Young Turks for instance.”
Kirk and Owens have been visiting campus across the nation as part of their Campus Clash tour. They recently were at The University of Texas in Austin. Their next stop is at Cleveland State University, Nov. 12.
