The Pan-African Action Committee organized a silent protest in support of impeaching Student Government President Connor Clegg before the Student Supreme Court hearing on the articles of impeachment 7 p.m. in the LBJ Teaching Theater.
PAAC’s protest was held at the Fighting Stallions at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in support of impeaching Clegg. Leaders in PAAC reminded protesters that upon entering the teaching theater, they would protest in silence.
TeraLynn Steele, sophomore and PAAC member, attended the protest and hearing in support of Clegg’s impeachment. Steele held a sign to support of the hearing process despite being pushed back a week due to the Student Government Senate not having enough senators in attendance.
“On my poster is a quote that says, ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ and it’s a quote from MLK,” Steele said. “I think that especially with last week and us not meeting quorum because several senators decided to skip, I felt like this was appropriate.”
Tafari Robertson, public relations senior and founder of PAAC, told protestors PAAC would be attending the impeachment hearing out of protest and in respect of the impeachment process.
“We’re going to go rally and respect the process because we have that ball rolling,” Robertson said. “This is a little bit more hinged on the actual deliberation and the testimony and that court hearing.”
Emmy Orioha, political science senior and PAAC president, said he believes many students care about the impeachment process and how it impacts them.
“It’s been a priority of ours to make it clear and resoundingly clear that students do care,” Orioha said.
After approximately an hour, the Supreme Court Justices unanimously found Clegg not guilty on all six Articles of Impeachment Many protestors stayed throughout the entire hearing and were vocally upset after the hearing results.
