After a loss to the Texas Longhorns and a cancelled series against Appalachian State, the Texas State Bobcats have righted the ship, sweeping the Georgia Southern Eagles in a three-game series that started Friday, March 30 and ended Saturday, March 31.
 
The Bobcat’s known for their high-powered offense outscored the Eagles 14-5 in the series, improving to 25-8 overall, with a Sun Belt Conference best record of 8-0. The Bobcats are 10-3 in home games, 5-3 in away games and 10-2 in neutral site matchups.
 
The first two games of the series were played in a back-to-back doubleheader. Backed by six runs from the Bobcat lineup, game one of the series saw Randi Rupp, senior pitcher, go the distance, allowing one run in seven innings.
 
Georgia Southern’s sole run of the game came in the fifth inning off a homerun from Allyssah Mullis, freshman catcher.
 
Four of the Bobcats six runs came at the bottom of the first, starting with a sacrifice bunt from Hailey MacKay, sophomore infielder, that brought in Jaclyn Molenaar, senior outfielder for the run. McKay reached base on fielder’s choice.
 
Ariel Ortiz, senior infielder, blasted a two-run homer on the following at-bat, rounding the bases and bringing in MacKay for the score.
 
Bailee Carter, sophomore infielder, homered to right field, scoring the fourth run of the first inning.
 
Texas State’s final two runs of the game came after MacKay hit a double to right center, bringing Christiana McDowell, sophomore outfielder, and Molenaar home for the scores. Texas State downed the Eagles 6-1.
 
Game two of the doubleheader was a closer affair, decided by one run.
 
Georgia Southern’s four runs came in off two separate two run homers, one in the first inning and the second in the fourth.
 
The Bobcats scored their first run of the game in the second inning after Carter made it home off a groundout to second base by Sierra Steimel, senior utility.
 
Texas States’ next two scores came in the fourth inning. The first after Haleigh Davis, sophomore infielder scored off a single to shortstop from McDowell. Mari Cranek earned their second run, after scoring on a passed ball.
 
The game winning runs came in the sixth inning after Tara Oltmann, freshman infielder, singled up the middle, bringing in both Sanem and Molenaar. The Bobcats held on for the 5-4 win.
 
The third game of the series saw the Bobcats lockdown the Eagles lineup, keeping them scoreless throughout the game.
 
The Bobcat’s offense struggled to find momentum through the first three innings before showing signs of life in the fourth. Texas State scored their first run off a groundout to shortstop from Steimel that brought home Cranek.
 
After a quiet fifth inning the Bobcat’s offense once again showed itself in the sixth, scoring the final two runs of the game. A single to right field from MacKay to bring in McDowell and a double to right field from Ortiz bringing in Matula for the score.
 
Up next for the Bobcats is a midweek matchup against Lamar at Bobcat Stadium Apr. 4 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a weekend series against Sun Belt Conference rivals South Alabama.
