The Texas State softball team dropped to the National Professional Fastpitch League’s Scrap Yard Dawgs 4-2 Nov. 2 at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The Dawgs took an early lead with senior pitcher Randi Rupp at the mound in the first inning. Two RBI’s gave the Dawgs a 2-0 lead over the Bobcats.
The Dawgs extended their lead with a single homerun at the top of the third making the score 3-0.
The Bobcats were unresponsive with Lauren Haeger on the mound for the Dawgs, leaving the score 3-0 by the bottom of the third.
The Bobcats’ finally answered back at the bottom of the fourth when sophomore outfielder Christiana McDowell crossed the plate.
The run came about after junior utility player Kourtney Pock was forced out at second on a fielder’s choice while McDowell ran home. The lead was cut down to 3-1.
The Dawgs scored their final run of the night at the top of the fifth with an RBI. The Bobcats trailed 4-1.
Junior utility player Mari Cranek scored the Bobcats’ final run at the bottom of the fifth with senior infielder Ariel Ortiz’s fly ball to left field.
Both teams were unable to score after the fifth, leaving the final score 4-2.
Rupp was granted the loss for the night. Rupp had five strikeouts, four runs and four hits in her four innings. Three of the four hits given were in the first inning.
Freshman pitcher Meagan King pitched for the Bobcats as well. King relieved Rupp in the fifth inning allowing one hit and one walk in the final moments of the game. King also struck out one batter.
Haegar was awarded the win for the Scrap Yard Dawgs. Haegar pitched four innings and allowed one unearned run with two hits. The pitcher walked two batters and finished with four strikeouts.
Texas State will continue their fall season Nov. 4 at the UTSA Round Robin in San Antonio, Texas. The Bobcats will take on the Roadrunners at 10 a.m. followed by a game against Texas A&M – Kingsville at 12:30 p.m.
