The Texas State Bobcats (3-2) beat the New Mexico State Aggies (1-4) by a final score of 4-3. It was a tight matchup that went down to the wire, with sophomore Tadiwa Mauchi clinching the final match and point for the Bobcats.
“It’s always good to get a win, especially in [this] format,” Texas State head coach Kendall Brooks said after the game. “It’s exciting; that’s what college tennis is all about. [It’s a] good experience for my young team to get that type of match early in the season.”
Freshman Olivia Collins and senior Ireland Simme lost the first game of their doubles match, but rebounded with five straight. Although the match got tight at the end, they were able to clinch a 6-4 win. Senior Chantajah Mills and Mauchi secured a 6-3 win to offset freshman Stoney Cooks’ and senior Emily Niers’ loss and win Texas State the doubles point.
Cooks and Collins got comfortable wins in singles, but after Niers, Roesch, and Simme dropped three straight matches, it came down to Mauchi against New Mexico State sophomore Emma Petton to decide the result. It was nervy, but Mauchi was able to win her match 7-5 and clinch the victory for the Bobcats.
“Credit to [the Aggies], they fought really hard, but luckily we were able to pull it out,” Brooks said.
With this result, the Bobcats have a record over .500 for the first time this season. They will try to continue this run of form against Sam Houston State at 12 p.m. Sunday, Feb, 8 2026, at Bobcat Tennis Complex.
“We got to talk about what when well today, what didn’t go well, and make sure that we recover quickly and bounce back, ready to play again on Sunday here at home against Sam Houston,” Brooks said. “That’s a team that we can beat if we are prepared.”
