Editor’s Note: For the remainder of the school year, The University Star will take on “The 11% Project”, an examination of Black students at Texas State through History, Election, Hometowns, Activism, Creatives, Mentorship and 10 years from now.
During the month of November, The Star will release a five-part audio series, as part of The 11% Project, covering aspects of the election from the perspective of Black students at Texas State.
For this installment of Language of the Unheard, The Star spoke to Black students on Texas State’s campus, as well as Dr. Dwonna Goldstone, about reproductive rights — the importance of choice, whether their votes this election were influenced by the candidates’ views upon access to birth control, abortions and STI testing, and the future of reproductive rights moving forward.
The students featured in this audio story were passionate about the importance of having a choice regarding birth control, as well as the need for easy access to quality healthcare for the Black community — specifically soon-to-be mothers, who are at a disproportionate mortality rate while giving birth. Each student highlighted the importance of emphasizing and conducting the conversation regarding reproductive rights, for acknowledging the topic only drives education and better understanding of healthcare and reproductive rights as a whole.
Students featured: Political science junior Quieraney Belvin, exercise and sports science junior Aries-Nicole Gage, sociology freshman DeAnthony Pittman, exercise and sports science sophomore Jayce Guillory, biology freshman Anasia Fusilier, nursing freshman Lula Jackson and business freshman Xochi Newcom.
Original soundtrack by Nosakhare Aduwa.
