The San Marcos Police Department has seen an increase in burglaries of motor vehicles (BMV)’s, arresting multiple people connected to the crime.
According to a statement posted to the San Marcos Emergency Services Facebook, officers responded to reports of suspicious people checking car doors, resulting in the arrest of five individuals.
Russel Wilde, San Marcos public safety communications specialist, said in a message to The Star that there were 146 BMV’s reported since the start of the year.
According to the San Marcos Police Department monthly crime and activity statistics, there were 30 reported BMV’s in April, a 43% increase since the same month last year. San Marcos Emergency Services indicated that an increase in BMV’s is typically seen during the summer, however according to police data, each month of 2026 has surpassed cases reported the same month last year.
San Marcos Emergency Services advises residents and visitors to lock their cars, remove valuables from plain view, never leave a firearm inside a vehicle and report suspicious activity immediately.
