San Marcos police are investigating two early-morning traffic incidents that occurred over Sunday and Monday: a fatal car crash and a high-speed pursuit that ended with a suspect escaping.
San Marcos Police received a call early Sunday morning for a major traffic collision on southbound IH-35 just before the 200 exit at McCarty Lane. The call initially started as a report of a stolen vehicle. Juan Martinez of New Braunfels, who stole the vehicle, crashed into the back of a semi-truck resulting in his death.
San Marcos police are looking for John Albert Barron, who allegedly led an officer on a high-speed pursuit and escaped. The incident took place around 4 a.m. Monday after a San Marcos police officer attempted to stop a White Lincoln Navigator that was going 120 m.p.h. on IH-35.
The vehicle exited IH35 onto the access road and then got back on the northbound to southbound turnaround and increased speed. The pursuit continued into San Antonio city limits with speeds at 100 m.p.h.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop at Jackson Middle School on the northwest side of San Antonio. Police say Barron exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby construction site behind the school.
San Marcos police and San Antonio police attempted to set up a perimeter using a helicopter and K9 units to apprehend Barron, but police determined Barron had escaped prior to them setting up a perimeter.
