Coming off only their second series loss of the season, the Texas State Bobcats were able to rebound and secure a midweek victory over Houston Christian by a 4-3 tally to get back in the win column Tuesday night at Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark.
Tuesday night’s affair was a true bullpen game, as both sides deployed a combined 13 pitchers for nine innings of play. HCU ran out a new arm every inning, using 8 total pitchers in what was presumably an attempt to never let the Bobcat bats settle in and time up any one pitcher.
Texas State started freshman southpaw Titan Targac. Targac, after a less-than-ideal first inning where he gave up a two-run homer, settled in and gave the ‘Cats four solid innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
Senior Alizaeh Gutierrez walked away with the win against the Huskies. Gutierrez tossed the seventh inning, giving up one run on one hit.
HCU got the scoring started in the top of the first as senior Jeremy Rader left the yard, putting the Huskies on top 2-0 after the opening frame.
Junior Manny Salas answered back for the Bobcats in the home half of the first with an RBI double to cut the deficit in half. Texas State took its first lead of the game shortly after in the second inning as senior Chase Mora added to his record home run tally, smashing a two-run shot and putting the ‘Cats ahead 3-2.
The scoring came to a halt after Mora’s home run, as neither side pushed a runner across the plate again until the seventh, when HCU senior Preston Curtis punched an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
Texas State reclaimed the lead for good in the very next half inning. With two strikes on him, freshman Tanner Carson hit the first home run of his collegiate career to propel the ‘Cats to a 4-3 lead.
Carson’s swing was all the ‘Cats needed to close out the game, as the duo of usual weekend starts Sam Hall and Kyle Froelich combined for the final six outs to secure the midweek win.
Texas State will hit the road for its most crucial conference series to date as the Bobcats head to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a date with the #22 Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.
First pitch in game one between Texas State and Southern Miss is set for 6 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2026, at Pete Taylot park. The game will be streaming on ESPN+.
