The Texas State Bobcats (25-16, SBC 6-6) secured the I-35 series sweep as they defeated the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners (20-22, American 8-7) by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday evening.
Senior pitcher Emma Strood tossed a complete game shut out, striking out eight and walking none in seven innings.
Texas State’s offense had a slow start, but three RBIs off the bat of redshirt freshman outfielder Harley Vestal proved to be all the Bobcats needed for the win.
The Bobcats threatened to score in the first inning when they loaded the bases, but the inning ended with a strikeout before they could score.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when senior outfielder Keely Williams walked. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Sydney Harvey and came around to score on a single by Vestal.
Vestal struck again in the sixth with an RBI double that scored senior catcher Megan Kelnar and Harvey after both reached base on singles.
Strood retired the Roadrunners in order in the top of the seventh to close the game, giving Texas State the 3-0 victory.
The ‘Cats will now hit the road to take on the Troy Trojans (23-14, SBC 5-7). Game one of the series will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 10. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
