The Texas State Bobcats took on the Sam Houston Bearcats in San Marcos, Texas, at Bobcat Softball Stadium. Maddy Azua tossed a complete game on the circle with 11 strikeouts to tie her season best.
With the help of a third-inning sacrifice fly for the lone run of the game off the bat of Harley Vetsal, helping the Bobcats win 1-0 over the Bearcats.
Azua started in the circle and tossed the complete game, only allowing five hits and walking one batter. She started off the game with a single but struck out the final two batters in seven pitches to get out of the inning with a runner in scoring position.
Texas State got two of its six hits in the first inning with singles from Karmyn Bass and Aiyana Coleman, but the pair were left stranded on the bases after a Vestal groundout.
Azua added two more strikeouts in the second and the Bobcats turned a double play in the third to retire the inning.
Texas State had two hits and its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third. When Karymn Bass put runners in scoring position with her double. Bases were loaded on a Coleman walk and Kate Bubela scoring off a sacrifice fly for the run.
Texas State turned a second double play in the fourth off a pop-up to Bubela, with Azua striking out a batter in the fourth.
In the bottom half of the inning, Texas State loaded the bases, but another pop-up left the runners stranded and the score steady at 1-0.
Errors allowed runners to reach bases from both sides in the fifth, but neither scored any runs, failing to capitalize.
Both sides were able to get a runner on in the sixth as well, but left them stranded again.
The game ended 1-0 after Azua struck out two batters and a pop fly in left field was caught to improve the ‘Cats record to 16-8 on the season.
The Bobcats will stay home to open Sun Belt play against ULM with a three-game series beginning March 13. The games will be at 6 p.m. on March 13, 2 pm on March 14, and 12 pm on March 15. All three games will be available to stream on ESPN+
