The Texas State Bobcats (9-7, 2-2) earned their first road win of the season, defeating the ULM Warhawks (3-13, 0-4) 84-79 Saturday afternoon at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The Bobcats and Warhawks went back and forth in scoring in the early minutes of the matchup. With 10:49 remaining in the first half, senior guard Lavell Brodnex made a free throw to tie the game at 17-17. A quick three-pointer from senior guard Jalen Bolden gave the Bobcats the lead.
The Bobcats maintained this lead for the remainder of the first half and into the early minutes of the second. With 16:22 remaining, sophomore guard Krystian Lewis scored a three-pointer to tie the game at 52-52. Freshman center Robert Fields made a free throw a minute later to take the Bobcats to a one-point lead.
The maroon and gold extended the lead throughout the second half to secure the win over the Warhawks.
Four Bobcats posted double-digit scoring on the afternoon, with senior guard Mark Drone scoring a team leading 24 points. Freshman forward DJ Hall added 17 points to the scoreboard and pulled down seven rebounds. Junior guard Kaden Gumbs contributed 12 points and had seven of the team’s 21 assists.
From the bench, Bolden scored 13 points against his former team, where he spent the past three seasons.
Despite Brodnex’s team leading 23 points and seven rebounds for the Warhawks, it wasn’t enough to defeat the Bobcats.
The Bobcats will continue their stretch of away games Thursday, Jan. 8, against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (9-7, 3-1). The Golden Eagles are coming off a 74-67 win against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.
The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
