A plethora of missed opportunities led Texas State softball (31-18) to a 4-3 midweek loss against Baylor (27-20), Wednesday night at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
Texas State left 10 runners on the bases, including two separate instances of leaving the bases loaded without getting any runs across either time.
The Bobcats pushed the first run of the game across in the home half of the first inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior catcher Karmyn Bass, taking the early 1-0 lead.
After another scoreless inning at the plate for Baylor, Texas State loaded the bases in the bottom half of the second, but a fielder’s choice out at home plate and a two-out groundout ended the scoring threat without Texas State scoring any runs.
Baylor’s bats came to life in the third inning. After going two-up, two-down to start the inning, Baylor ripped off five straight two-out hits against senior pitcher Emma Strood, scoring three runs and chasing Strood from the game in the process, as Texas State turned to ace Maddy Azua.
Baylor scored one more in the inning off an error at shortstop before Azua induced a groundout to stop the bleeding.
Texas State immediately answered back in the bottom half, as an RBI single by junior utility Kat Zarate and a sacrifice fly from freshman Harley Vestal cut the Baylor lead down to one.
Texas State loaded the bases again in the fifth, but in eerily similar fashion to the second inning, a fielder’s choice and a two-out groundout killed the scoring threat as Texas State once again failed to score.
The 4-3 score held to the seventh. Texas State gave itself a chance to send the game to extras, putting the tying run on third base, but as was the story for the entire night, the Bobcats failed to come up with the key hit, falling to the Bears.
Texas State will return to action for senior weekend against Coastal Carolina. Game one of the series between the Bobcats and Chanticleers is set for 6 p.m. Friday, April 24, 2026, at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The game will be streaming on ESPN+.
