Texas State baseball (26-15) bounced back from a weekend sweep, getting back into the win column with a 3-1 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word (18-20) on a rainy Tuesday night at Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark.
Run scoring was limited all night, as two home runs provided all the scoring for the Bobcats and a passed ball provided the lone run for the Cardinals.
On the hill, freshman southpaw Titan Targac put together his best outing of the season up to this point, tossing five innings, surrendering five hits and striking out six. The lone run that crossed while Targac was on the mound was unearned, as it came off the passed ball.
Despite the strong effort, Targac didn’t get credit for the win as he left with the game tied. The decision went to senior righty Cameron O’Banan, who worked a three-up-three down seventh inning before Texas State took the lead in the bottom half.
Dawson Park got the show started early for Texas State as he belted a lead-off home run in the first inning. A home run to open up the game is usually a good sign for a team’s momentum, but the Bobcat bats went cold for the next five innings as Park’s blast was still the only run scored into the seventh.
With the game tied at 1-1, junior infielder Justin Vossos provided a much needed spark for the Bobcat lineup, hitting a ball deep into the San Marcos night sky for a go-ahead two-run home run, putting the Bobcats on top for good.
Junior Sam Hall took the ball in the ninth. It took Hall only eight pitches to dispose of the final three batters that UIW sent to the plate, picking up his first save of the season.
Texas State will hit the road for its biggest Sun Belt series of the season as it travels to South Carolina to take on the conference leading, No. 9 ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
First pitch of game one between the ‘Cats and Chants is set for 5 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Spring Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
