Texas State softball (8-5) ran its win streak to three games with its second win over Kansas City in the River State Classic by a tally of 3-1, Saturday morning at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The action between the Bobcats and Kangaroos was scarce throughout the first four innings of play in San Marcos. Texas State starting pitcher Emma Strood tossed four scoreless frames to begin the game.
Through the first four innings, Strood K’d five and only surrendered one hit. However, opposite Strood, Kansas City freshman Brooke Seppi held the Bobcats scoreless through four innings as well.
Strood finally ran into trouble in the fifth inning as she loaded the bases. Strood didn’t make it out of the inning, as she was pulled in favor of the Bobcats ace, Maddy Azua. Azua limited the damage, only allowing one to cross the plate on an RBI groundout.
In the home half of the fifth, Seppi finally blinked in the circle just as Strood did. Junior infielder Kat Zarate left the yard for the fourth time this season, knotting the game up at 1-1.
After a scoreless sixth inning from Azua, senior catcher Karmyn Bass delivered an RBI double, plating senior outfielder Keely Williams, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Senior first baseman Aiyana Coleman added an insurance run, driving Bass in with an RBI single.
Despite putting the tying run on base in the seventh, Kansas City was unable to break through as Azua worked a scoreless final frame, shutting the door on the ‘Roos.
Texas State will return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader to close out the River State Classic. The Bobcats will begin the day with Brown at 10 a.m. followed by a second clash with the Colorado State Rams at 12:15.
Both games will be available to stream on ESPN+.
