The Texas State Bobcats (9-11, 5-5 SBC) started their two-game road trip with an 85-53 blowout loss against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (11-11, 4-6 SBC) on Wednesday night at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C.
Sophomore guard Kyra Anderson led the way for the Bobcats with a strong performance, with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals. Fellow sophomore guard Saniya Burks was the only other Bobcat to reach double figures, scoring 11 points, nine of which came in the third quarter. Texas State shot 16-60 from the field, their second-lowest field goal percentage of the season.
Coastal Carolina was led by forward Tessa Grady, who shot a perfect 8-8 from the field and 3-3 from three-point range. Grady was a crucial part of the Chanticleers’ electric shooting night, as the home team shot 11-24 from beyond the arc.
The Bobcats struggled to respond to the Chanticleers, starting the first quarter scorching hot. Coastal Carolina went on a 21-2 run while shooting 60% from three-point range. Texas State, meanwhile, shot 3-12 from the field and committed eight turnovers.
After a slow first quarter, the Bobcats settled in, winning the second quarter in a 12-8 defensive slugfest. Anderson led the way with eight of the 12 Bobcat points in the quarter, while Texas State also forced seven turnovers, bringing the lead down to 11 going into the half.
Despite a promising end to the half for the Bobcats, the Chanticleers came out firing, shooting 5-6 from the three-point line en route to a 33-point quarter. Texas State had success at the free-throw line, shooting 20-22 in the second half, but failed to generate much offense outside of that, only making seven field goals the rest of the game.
With the loss, the Bobcats moved to .500 in conference play at 5-5, currently tied for sixth in the Sun Belt Conference. Texas State will have a chance to bounce back against Georgia State at the Convocation Center in Atlanta, Ga.
The game will be set to tip off Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. and will be available to watch on ESPN+.
