Over the weekend, the Texas State Bobcats (11-11, 4-6 Sun Belt) travelled to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on the James Madison Dukes (10-11, 3-6 Sun Belt) at the Atlantic Union Bank Center, in a game they got walloped 82-57.
Texas State couldn’t handle the Dukes as a result of lackluster shooting, only making 19 shots out of 57 attempts, also pairing that with the fact that they lost by 25 points, proving that James Madison was just too much to handle in this matchup.
Leading the team in points scored and overall impact was senior guard Mark Drone, who dropped 17 points off 5-19 shooting from the field while also snagging four rebounds and one steal.
Next in the stat column was freshman forward DJ Hall, who was the only other player in double digits with 14 points on 6-12 shooting, with four rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Kaden Gumbs missed the mark by one, dropping nine points on 2-9 shooting and going a perfect 4-4 as well as snagging four boards and having a team high four steals.
Off the bench was freshman center Robert Fields, who scored eight points in a consistent performance, going 3-4 from the field and 2-2 from the line. Fields also led the team in rebounds with six grabs and one block.
This recent loss continues to highlight the absurdity of Texas State’s record, having now lost its eighth game on the road. They’ve compiled an overall record of 1-8 when playing away, their lone victory having occurred against last-placed Louisiana-Monroe (3-18, 0-9 SBC) back on Jan. 3.
The Bobcats will look to bounce back at home in San Marcos at 7 p.m. this Wednesday, Jan. 28, against Marshall at Strahan Arena. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+
