After starting the season 0-4, the Texas State Bobcats (3-6) have won three out of their last five games after they blew out the UNT-Dallas Trailblazers (3-3) 64-38 on Wednesday afternoon at Strahan Arena.
The Bobcats extended their non-D1 opponent winning streak to 16 matches after they held the Trailblazers to 13 total buckets across four quarters. The game was gritty and snappy, with neither side taking full advantage of their opportunities, but Texas State was more clinical from close range, which was the deciding factor in this one.
Both sides played tight coverage, but UNT-Dallas was unable to set up their tempo as they turned the ball over 23 times.
The first half was close, with the Bobcats having a nine-point advantage entering halftime, but Texas State scored 19 points while only giving up six in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach for the Trailblazers.
The Bobcats had three players surpass 10 points during the game, with freshman forward Kaliyah Murphy leading the pack with 12 points. Trailblazers junior forward De’Asia Johnson led their squad in shooting with nine points despite going 4-12 from the field
Sophomore guard KP Parr led Texas State in assists with six, and no UNT-Dallas player notched more than two.
The Bobcats only had two of their 14 three-point shooting attempts go in, but they dominated the inside zone, scoring 44 points from that area while UNT-Dallas only had 18 points in the paint.
Texas State will open up its Sun Belt Conference schedule against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, who have had a tough start to their season after having lost all nine of their non-conference matchups leading up to their upcoming encounter with the Bobcats, next Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 5 p.m. at Strahan Arena.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
