Leaning on a dominant fifth inning and overall steady defense, the Texas State Bobcats (12-7) defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (14-7) 4-1 to win the weekend series Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
Texas State set the tone early in the second inning when senior utility Sydney Harvey made a leaping catch at the wall, robbing the Lions of extra bases and igniting the Bobcat dugout.
The catch built momentum and showcased a sharper defensive focus that carried throughout the game compared to the doubleheader yesterday.
In a game that remained tight through four innings, the pitching staff kept Southeastern Louisiana at bay through the combined efforts of Emma Strood, Chesney Davis and Maddison Azua.
Texas State pushed through in the fifth inning, stringing together quality at-bats and capitalizing on opportunities to break the game open. The surge created critical separation and shifted full control to the Bobcats.
Senior outfielder Keely Williams played a key role in the win as she started the initial rally in the fifth, finishing with one hit four at-bats and one RBI while providing a steady presence at the plate during the pivotal stretch.
“I feel like the last few weeks we’ve been really trying to find our game and we’ve been trying to find different ways and different strategies, and I feel like after our team talk yesterday, we just broke it down to ‘this is what works with us, and this is what doesn’t,’” Williams said. “So just bringing it today … and then it came all together.”
Azua entered in relief and closed out the final 1 1/3 innings, shutting down the Lions and securing a crucial victory against a good mid-major program. Backed by clean defense, Texas State held firm to complete the bounce back performance.
The Bobcats will return to action at home against Tarleton State with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. Friday, March 6. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
