For the second day in a row, the Texas State Bobcats (21-15, 4-5 SBC) fell short in a 2-1 loss to the Marshall Thundering Herd (25-10, 7-2 SBC) Sunday morning.
Junior pitcher Jules King started in the circle for the Thundering Herd, pitching the entire game while only allowing one run and adding two strikeouts.
For the Bobcats, freshman pitcher Kaili Whiterell started in the circle, but only pitched two innings before being pulled.
Marshall started the first inning hot after sophomore third baseman Sydni Burko hit a home run into left field to strike first, giving Marshall a 1-0 lead. Following the hot start, Texas State was able to stop any further damage after Whiterell delivered two timely strikeouts.
After a quiet inning from the Bobcat bats, Marshall opened the top of the second inning strong. Following some timely bunts to get on base, sophomore right fielder Ava Blake hit an RBI single to extend the Marshall lead to 2-0.
After the second run, Texas State pulled Kaili Whiterell for junior pitcher Madison Azua.
Azua would have a strong showing, pitching the rest of the game for the Bobcats, shutting out Marshall while adding three strikeouts over five innings pitched.
The Bobcat offense would come alive in the bottom of the third after senior outfielder Keely Williams hit an RBI single to get the Bobcats on the board, bringing the score to 2-1 Marshall.
The fourth, fifth and sixth were quiet for both teams as they combined for just three total hits and zero runs.
After a quiet seventh inning for the Marshall bats, the Bobcats had one last chance to respond at the bottom of the inning. While Texas State managed to get two on base, a pop-out crushed any hopes of a comeback, with the Thundering Herd winning the game 2-1.
The Bobcats will start their four-game road trip against the UTSA Roadrunners at Roadrunner Field at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 31. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
