After falling to No. 19 Oklahoma State earlier in the day, the Texas State Bobcats (6-5) took care of business in an extra innings 7-6 win over the Kansas City Kangaroos (4-6) Friday evening at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The Bobcats started off hot as senior first basemen Aiyana Colman delivered a three-run bomb in the bottom of the first to give the Bobcats the lead 3-0. They extended their lead with senior infielder Sami Hood’s solo shot, her first as a Bobcat.
However, the Kangaroos did not go down without a fight as they came back swinging, adding three runs in the top of the third to make it a one run game before promptly tying it in the the fourth.
The offenses were quiet until the seventh inning as an RBI sacrifice fly gave the Kangaroos a 5-4 lead over the Bobcats. Texas State responded in kind and sent the game to extra innings.
After a silent eighth inning, the Kangaroos struck first in the ninth inning with an RBI single to left field, taking a 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Bobcats had two runners on as freshman outfielder Harley Vestal stepped up to the plate and answered with an RBI double to walk it off and give Texas State the 7-6 win.
“I think we all came together and wanted that win and I think we all think we should’ve had it sooner,” Vestal said.
The Bobcats will return to Bobcat Softball Stadium on Friday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. to take on Colorado State to continue the River State Classic.
