Despite combined efforts from DJ Hall and Mark Drone, which saw them accounting for more than half of the team’s overall points, the Texas State Bobcats (8-7, 1-2 SBC) fell to the Troy Trojans (9-5, 2-0 SBC) 100-80 on Wednesday afternoon at Trojan Arena in Troy, Ala.
The Bobcats continue to remain winless on the road this season, going 0-6 so far compared to their 8-1 record at home. The next three games for Texas State will also be away from San Marcos before they return to Strahan Arena.
Texas State was led by Hall in the scoring department as the newcomer scored 22 points and Drone was right behind him with 20. Drone was also the Bobcats’ lead facilitator, as he led the team with eight assists.
The Bobcats played catch-up throughout the match, as they entered the second half down 45-33. Although they scored more points in the second half than they did in the first, they were unable to slow down Troy in all facets of the game.
Troy had a more balanced offensive approach; they had five players with 10 or more points, with junior Thomas Dowd leading the pack with 22 points himself. Troy didn’t have one player who reached Drone’s mark of eight assists, but their assists were more spread out throughout the team.
Ultimately, one of the deciding factors of this game was three-point shooting. Troy hit 62.5% of their three-point attempts, while Texas State only made one in the first half.
The Bobcats will try to break their winless streak away from home with a matchup on Saturday at Fant–Ewing Coliseum against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.
Tip-off between the Bobcats and Warhawks is set for 2:30 p.m. The game will be available to watch through ESPN+.
