In their last mid-week game of the regular season, the Texas State Bobcats dropped a potential NCAA Tournament resume-building game to the UTSA Roadrunners 19-4 run-ruled loss Tuesday evening at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.
By the end of the first inning, it was all Roadrunners (35-17, 16-8 AC) as UTSA came out scoring hot, taking advantage of multiple errors and continued rolling that momentum throughout the night.
Meanwhile the Bobcats (31-22, 13-14 SBC) could not get anything rolling substantially, despite having just one less hit in the game overall than the Roadrunners.
Freshman Titan Targac started on the mound and took the loss after he surrendered the eight runs, only one of which was earned.
Texas State did start off the game relatively well with the bats, getting runner’s on the corners and chasing starting pitcher Blayne Lyne away after just nine pitches thrown. However, runs were not manufactured after a double play occurred.
From there, UTSA began a shellacking of dominating proportion, scoring the first six runs through a barrage of doubles and singles that took advantage of three fielding errors alone. The bottom of the first was capped off with a two-run bomb from Caden Miller that made it 8-0, giving Texas State a deep hole to recover.
The Bobcats did tally some runs onto the board overall. After senior third basemen Chase Mora broke yet another program record by acquiring his 409th career total bases off a double, shortstop Brady Boles got him to score and get Texas State on the board with an RBI single.
The Roadrunners offense continued to dominate through the course of the next three innings, further building their lead as it ballooned with an additional eight in the second and third innings to run up the score to 16-1 by the end of the third.
Freshman Blake Beheler, who’s had minimal action this season, pounced and cut into the deficit with a two-run homer in the fourth, his first in his collegiate career, cutting the UTSA lead to 16-3.
The Roadrunners capped off their scoring run in the bottom of the fourth, not only taking those runs back but adding an additional one to drive up the score to 19-2.
Catcher Austin Munguia homered in the seventh to add one to the Bobcats and in his stats, hitting his first of the season, but the game ended shortly after as UTSA completed the run-rule.
There was a postgame scuffle between the coaching staffs of the Bobcats and Roadrunners, as the two programs tangled with each other when Texas State accused UTSA of purposely throwing at Bobcat players following Beheler’s home run.
The Bobcats will return home for their final Sun Belt Conference regular season series with tournament hopes and positioning on the line at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 against Marshall at Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark. The series will be streamed on ESPN+.
