In the Nov. 28 issue of The University Star, we published an opinions column titled “Your DNA is an abomination.” The column has received widespread criticism from readers, with many expressing that they find the author’s ideas to be racist. The University Star’s opinion pages are a forum for students to express and debate ideas. While our publication does not endorse every opinion put forth by student columnists or guest contributors, as the editor I take responsibility for what is printed on our pages.

The original intent of the column was to comment on the idea of race and racial identities. We acknowledge that the column could have been clearer in its message and that it has caused hurt within our campus community. We apologize and hope that we can move forward to a place of productive dialogue on ways to bring our community together.

Columnist should be removed from paper. Clearly racist. Calling for the extermination of a race is disgusting.

  3. Matt on November 29th, 2017 2:05 pm

This is not an apology; it’s “the original intent was…” and “the column could have been clearer” masquerading as an apology. As the Editor, you should be ashamed to have let such poor writing be published in your paper. As an institution, Texas State should be ashamed to have someone with such lack of discernment leading their paper.

You say, “the original intent of the column was to comment on the idea of race and racial identities”. Likewise, many proponents of the article have said that while it contained some poorly chosen sentences, the intent of the piece is worthwhile. These proponents, yourself included, imply that the intent was the idea that whiteness and race are social constructs that can and should be destroyed as their only use is oppression. That the “white” discussed in the article is the construct and not solely the skin color.

However, if this is at all what Martinez was trying to say, he did an exceedingly poor job. So poor, in fact, that he literally says, “This column functions, however, within a different definition of whiteness: to be white in the United States is to be a descendant of those Europeans who chose to abandon their identity in search of something ‘new’ – stolen land.” By his own definition, Martinez is saying that his column defines whiteness not as a social construct, but as a classification determined by ancestor decisions. It’s a ridiculous definition.

The issue of Martinez’s faulty definition is illustrated when he writes, “You were not born white, you became white”. So which is it? Was I born a descendant of Europeans who came for something new, or did I somehow become the descendant of these people without being born that way? Please tell me you see the contradiction here. Please tell me you see the issue with “you were not born white” in an article titled, “Your DNA is an abomination.”

The article goes on to say things like, “In your whiteness…You don’t give a damn”, “Through a constant, ideological struggle in which we aim to deconstruct ‘whiteness’ and everything attached to it, we will win”, “Whiteness will be over because we want it to be”, “…accept this death as the first step in defining yourself as something other than the oppressor”, and finally, “until then, remember this: I hate you because you shouldn’t exist”. If you truly believe this piece is about “the idea of race” (as you defended in your attempt to apologize and take responsibility), replace the places Martinez discusses whiteness or “you” with his own definition, or with “your DNA” as he’s implied in the title.

This opinion piece contradicts itself, offers no clear examples or coherent discussion on its argument or solution, and uses abhorrently extreme and absolute language. Racist content and tumblr-level immaturity withstanding, you should’ve held your paper to a higher standard of quality. Further, when the article began to receive widespread criticism, you should’ve had the maturity to listen to criticism, read the article with a more refined lens, and take full responsibility in a professional, non-excusatory manner.

Your name and this apology (or lack thereof) are searchable and easily found by future potential employers. I hope they are able to see it for what it is—severe lack of discernment, professionalism, and ability to take responsibility.

“Racist attitudes come from a position of power.” Racism can exist in anyone’s heart. Martinez just illustrated it.

I find you as pathetic as the person who wrote this crazed diatribe for allowing such hate-filled rhetoric to be spewed.

You should not have removed the offending article. Isn’t this rag’s tagline “defending the first amendment”? Re-publish the anti-White column so we may see it for ourselves, debate it for ourselves, and judge it on its own merit; rather than on articles about the offending article. Or if you don’t wish to publish it, release it to someone who will. I have several places I could publish it to, and I don’t fear the backlash that will result from doing so.

  8. alex on November 29th, 2017 6:52 pm

You should NEVER have published this garbage in the first place. Shame!

  9. Ed Slook on November 30th, 2017 12:18 pm

Martinez Nov 28th article is the epitome of hate and racist attitude. Allowing him to publish such a despicable article damages the University and promotes hate. Separation from this should be immediate. No more will we let monsters hide behind thin veils of the 1st amendment while dehumanizing innocents. Don’t be part of the hate, stand up and do the right thing. He should be fired from the staff immediately and brought before the University board for expulsion.

  10. Pin Sayer on November 30th, 2017 12:43 pm

Save your “university” and RESIGN IMMEDIATELY – You don’t deserve your post and should be removed.

Notice I did not refer to you as Texas State. You by no means should represent the people of the great State of Texas and should be ashamed of your “university” for promoting further hate speech. Your “university” should neither qualify for that classification nor receive Texas state funds. I will be sending this same message to all State officials.

I am simply appalled that your institution can be considered a free and open campus when you promote Anti-any-color racism. It is absolutely disgusting and a by-product of your institutions liberal bias. I have three daughters. Two of which have expressed interest in attending your place of hate. I have decided that not only will I discourage them to consider your institution but will refuse to fund their supposed education at your place of hate. I’m sure that you will hide behind your student’s and editor’s “free speech” when it is anti-white speech and that the views reflected are not those of your institution. I’m waiting for it. I know that you and your institution will NOT accept responsibility for this unnecessary smear on what I believed was a diversified campus and city. I will also recommend to every student that I come in contact with to avoid SWTSU by all means.

It is my “opinion” entire leadership team should be dismissed for gross negligence in promoting hate speech within your own university rag. Shame on you, shame on SWTSU, and shame on the great State of Texas for funding your joke of an institution. A university (purposely lower case) it is not but an embarrassing promoter of hate and racism that has no place within our State funded institutions.

At a minimum, I call for your newspaper editor and author to be removed from further newspaper responsibilities. A simple apology email from your President, without any ramifications whatsoever, does not cut it!

Students like Mr. Martinez should be thrown out of school immediately. Seems he is the racist. Who in there right mind would want to attend Texas University with a scumbag like him roaming around campus. Plus he was arrested when Donald Trump became president. I guess he’s a real hero in his own eyes. I’m willing to pay half of a one way bus ride to Mexico for this scum if the school agrees to pay the other half!

  15. Boogra on November 30th, 2017 1:18 pm

Just disgusting. Is the IQ of the individual who wrote this, and those who approved its publication, so low that they cannot see the double standard here? I wonder what the reaction would have been had the article been written by a white supremacist who wrote that he “…hates ‘x’ group because you don’t deserve to exist”. How large would that protest have been? And would you, as the Editor, have taken such a “whatever” attitude toward an editorial like that? I doubt it.

I feel sorry for anyone who truly believes that this country is full of systemic racism. If it’s so horrible here, and life for minorities is so impossible, then why are so many trying to get here – indeed, even dying in the process of attempting to do so?

Editorials like this are not designed to “comment on the idea of race and racial identities”. It was designed to foment hate against white people. People who craft drivel like this are serving only one purpose – that of driving a wedge between people based on color and ethnicity. There is no greater form of racism.

You’re a poor editor, and even worse at apologizing. In other words, one day you’ll be great at fitting into the current mainstream, conformist media. You and your ilk are not the counter-culture as you believe. You are but a cog in the machine of hatred designed to foment class and race warfare in this country. Good luck with that.

  16. TheMule on November 30th, 2017 3:36 pm

Take Martinez’s ugly essay and replace the word “white” with the word “Mexican” or “black” and tell me you would allow such racist garbage in your paper? You wouldn’t. You allowed the hate speech because you either agree with it or you’re too much of a coward to stand up against psychopaths like Martinez and his evil white-hating ilk.

  17. Jessie Toughy on November 30th, 2017 3:51 pm

All educational systems must put a complete and instant stop to this journalist bigotry. This is not the first University to allow students to voice their disenfranchisement over the fact that Trump was elected President. Much like CUNY of New York where the Sociology Professor Jessie Daniels calls for Whites to stop reproducing because having families is racist, Universities have given in to the far right for way too long now. Its time to stop this madness. Organizations such as BLM, Black Panthers, Antifa to name a few, in hopes to take over and squelch free speech only to replace it with the white privilege narrative to fit their agenda. We simply won’t stand for this anymore. Racism is racism no matter what color the bigot is and hate is hate no matter who you are. If you are non white you are capable of racism just as much as anyone else. This article proves it. This is a disgusting display or hate mongering and TSU should either set the standard for other Universities to follow in dealing with these type of situations or suffer the loss of funding. Severe loss.

  18. Friendo on November 30th, 2017 4:02 pm

Rudy Martinez can talk about DNA because white people discovered it.

Mexicans were eating human hearts while Europeans were exploring. Thank you, Mexico, for your cultural contribution! Thank Heavens I don’t live in that $hithole called Mexico.

“IN HIS 2003 book, Human Accomplishment: Pursuit of Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, 800 BC to 1950, Charles Murray argued that the great artistic and scientific accomplishments were overwhelmingly European. ”What the human species is today,” he wrote, “it owes in astonishing degree to what was accomplished in just half a dozen centuries by the peoples of one small portion of the northwestern Eurasian land mass.”

“The New York Times unsurprisingly called it “more bluster than rigor” and “unconvincing” – it was nonetheless the first attempt to quantify “as facts” the creative genius of individuals in terms of cultural origin and geographic distribution. Murray did this by calculating the amount of space allocated to these individuals in reference works, encyclopedias, and dictionaries. Based on this metric, he concluded that “whether measured in people or events, 97 percent of accomplishment in the sciences occurred in Europe and North America” from 800 BC to 1950.”

You are the vanguard of hate, intolerance and ignorance.

“The original intent of the column was to comment on the idea of race and racial identities. We acknowledge that the column could have been clearer in its message and that it has caused hurt within our campus community”

This is a sham apology from an apparently racist editor who entertained the notion of genocide. I read your opinion published at the beginning of the year, “Editor.” …”Stamp out bigotry and hate?” You just promulgated it and made Texas State a less safe, less inclusive place. And you in all likelihood cost the University donation money, the same money which (in all likelihood) helps fund / offset your tuition.

Wow. Great job. Please find another one. And find another university as well, perhaps UC Berk. I am sure they will offer you a full and free ride.

  22. Chuck Long on November 30th, 2017 5:27 pm

“We apologize and hope that we can move forward to a place of productive dialogue on ways to bring our community together”

Where in that unfocused diarrhea of hateful, racist id did you find even a gram of hope to find “a place of productive dialogue on ways to bring our community together”? Its entire premise is to tear communities and people apart, based on the colors of their skin.

Your apology rings hollow, as it is my contention that pushing people apart and destroying communities based on racialist lines is precisely what you had in mind when you published this wretched, racist screed. The University should dispatch both you and the author.

  23. Enough on November 30th, 2017 5:59 pm

The article’s message “could have been clearer”? It was perfectly clear. A direct quote from the article: “I hate you because you shouldn’t exist.”

Let ME be clear, Ms. Cervantes. You are a coward for failing to condemn this trash for what it is in the simplest and strongest terms: it is the hate-filled ramblings of a racist, which you have pro-actively decided to publish.

Even President Trauth herself stated that this garbage was racist, unacceptable and antithetical to the schools values. That’s a far cry from the tacit endorsement you gave it.

  24. Linda M Armidon on November 30th, 2017 6:07 pm

I will be telling my grandson to find another University. Not paying for him to be racially attacked. Why do you not move your school a few hundred miles south, and go on hating from the other side of the wall that will appear shortly. Have you seen what happened to Evergreen? the NFL? Starbucks? Keep it up and you will reap exactly the hatred you sow.

  25. Richard Moore on November 30th, 2017 6:24 pm

Your opinion page is an abomination.

  26. anonymous on December 1st, 2017 2:58 pm

Your article qualifies as intent to commit genocide under article 3 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to which the United States is a signatory.

The use of force up to and including the use of lethal force in self defence against the perpetrators of this crime is justified under international law.

You third world vermin have worn out your welcome in this country. Be prepared to die at the hands of a White man. You will have justly deserved it.

  27. Laurie on December 1st, 2017 3:01 pm

Sorry editor, but you and that student who wrote the article need to admit that #1 he is severely racist, and 2# that you allowed the article therefore you are complicit, and you should resign. The university needs to issue a WORLD WIDE public apology. I don’t live in Texas and not affiliated with the university, I live far away from your university and your state, but this article has still hurt me deeply. I am Caucasian, I am not racist, in fact my grandchildren are Hispanic and Native American. You and the people who printed this extremely damaging article are guilty of racism just as the author is. Shame, shame, shame on all of you who are making excuses for this. Please resign, and please expel or severely discipline this student for his racism that is so vile I can feel it in my deepest core.

Cervantes, your apology is lame and indicates your tacit approval of that racist scum pig, Martinez. If whites are so evil, then what does that moron say about the Hispanic drug lords in Mexico or the Hispanic presidents of Venezuela and Cuba, all of whom torment and kill their own people? Tell him to park his dumb ass in Africa for awhile and witness the various tribal groups fight and kill each other, like what the Muslim Hausa do to the Christian Yoruba in Nigeria. Has that idiot ever heard of the black on black genocide that occurred in Rwanda? Martinez is a moral midget incapable of deep, insightful thinking. Cervantes, I suspect you’re right down in the cesspool with him.

  31. NoneYaBusiness on December 6th, 2017 12:05 am

You as the editor of this newspaper allowed an ugly, racist opinion piece to appear in your newspaper. These things don’t happen by accident.

Your apology is not accepted as I am certain you also share the authors ugly racist thoughts.

Filthy editor-is-weak Cervantes should resign and be disciplined by the university. Did you really think you could get folk woke …You WILL learn YOUR place… probably through unemployment. As for Rudy, you’re a lost joke. Your DNA is the problem… sorry but it must suck to SWALLOW the warm taste of defeat… Maybe it’s time to go abroad…Venezuela might be a good choice:-)

  34. Michinobu A. on December 18th, 2017 6:16 pm

Let’s be frank here, the US is one of the least racist countries in the world, when we’re talking about racism by the dominant group in a very traditional sense (not with the more recent expanded definition to only include white people as perpetrators of racism). Articles like what Rudy Martinez wrote don’t normally exist in non-Western countries.

And, what has Martinez accomplished with this, aside from letting off steam? Articles like this don’t really tell white people that “Here is someone of color who is hurt”. But, instead is more like, “Here is someone who wishes me ill”.

Let’s try to take reimagine this article without race being involved. Imagine someone who’s upset at his co-workers because only 12 people at work are decent and most are shitty people. Now, imagine if he communicated to people at work that they are abominations and that he hates them because shouldn’t exist.

The consequences of communicating such a message would extend beyond more than just termination of employment. This person might even be sent to jail.

Not that I’m calling for Martinez to be sent to jail, but if someone wrote something similar about him then I don’t think that he would just dismiss and say that this person can’t be guilty of making threats because of some sort of circumstances that this person might have. I think it would be more likely that he would call the police on such a person.

  35. Thomas Hutson Veteran on January 10th, 2018 12:55 pm

  37. Jerry. on January 21st, 2018 7:54 pm

“The article could’ve been clearer”, really? No, it was pretty clear. And you’re an accomplice to it. You printed it, you’re defending it and your robotic, “lawyer-speak” of an “apology” is a disgrace. I know it’s cliche to say but let’s pretend this was about another race, it would’ve never been printed. THAT is honest. Just admit you were wrong, otherwise silence is consent.

  38. Jerry. on January 21st, 2018 7:56 pm

And I want to add that any paper that prints this about any race, along with the author of any ignorant piece such as this, deserve the vitriol they receive. How awful to wish this upon any group of people.
