Black student organizations at Texas State have endured various challenges while maintaining a welcoming space for new and returning Black students.
Black Student Alliance (BSA) and Black Women United (BWU) are two examples of cultural organizations on campus that have a legacy of fostering strong relationships among their members and the people in their immediate community. Through demanding events, like the Black Lives Matter movement and the COVID-19 pandemic, the members of these organizations stood shoulder-to-shoulder and found ways to power through.
In this video story, reporters Douglas Smith and Rasika Gasti speak to Autumn Godsey, president of BWU, Ashley Seals, member of BWU and Johnna McClendon, parliamentarian at BSA, about how the organizations affect the sense of identity of their members, their response to recent acts of racial injustice across the country and adapting to the pandemic.
Created by Douglas Smith and Rasika Gasti.
