Track and field finishes third at Texas A&M Invitational

Texas State track racked up seven top ten Sun Belt marks, three individual gold medals, and third place finishes for both teams Friday and Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational Meet
The team rose above nationally ranked schools, including the 27th ranked Arizona State women’s team, to rack up 74 points on the men’s side and 55.75 for the women’s.
Senior Kylah Smith took the highest slot in conference over the weekend, clocking in at 13.70 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles for the second place slot in conference.
Junior transfer Leslie Romero took the individual women’s title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:03.93, placing her at fourth in the Sun Belt and seventh in the Texas State record book. The distance standout previously set two school records at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in the 3,000- and 5,000- meter run in her first season at Texas State.
Senior Ben Collerton now ranks in the top ten in five separate events after his 10th-ranked finish in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.8 seconds.
The Bobcats saw four other Sun Belt ranking marks, including freshman Sadi Giles, who took the No. 7 slot in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.99 seconds. Freshman Live Hilton trailed close behind with a ninth-ranked time of 12.06 seconds. Hilton is now top ten in three events and lays claim to the No. 1 spot in her signature long jump competition.
Senior Samuel Hussey also moved up in conference with his 10th place haul of 53.42 meters in the hammer throw, and senior Sidnee Land rounded out the conference spots with a No. 6 discus throw of 44.72 meters.
Taking home another gold on the men’s side was senior T’Mond Johnson, who placed first in shot put with an 18.85-meter throw. Freshman Dereck Elkins brought in the final first place finish with a time of 14:58.96 in the 5,000-meter run.
Texas State will travel to LSU for their one-day Alumni Gold meet on April 20th before returning home for the Bobcat Classic on April 26-27.
