The Federal Trade Commission announced Monday an uptick in scammers posing as the Social Security Administration to get callers’ personal information.
The fake phone calls come from the real customer service number, 1.800.772.1213, but are actually scammers threatening those receiving the call. According to the administration’s website, employees will never threaten individuals in order to receive information.
The scamming process usually includes a falsified call coming from the administration’s phone number and a caller posing as an administration worker. The caller then asks for personal information, like a social security number, in order to increase social security payments or discontinue them.
The FTC suggests hanging up immediately upon receiving one of these calls. Any reports of Social Security Administration scam calls can be made at the Office of Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 or on their website.
