Coming off a loss against the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, the Texas State Women’s basketball team got back to its winning ways Thursday, Jan. 25 with a dominating 81-56 victory over Georgia Southern.
The win improves Texas State to 13-7 overall and 6-3 in Sun Belt Conference play. The Bobcats are 6-2 at home with a 7-4 away record.
The matchup was a tale of two halves, the first a close game that saw two evenly matched opponents trading blows on the court, the second a dominating defensive performance from the Bobcats.
Texas State got off to a hot start thanks to a game opening three from junior sharpshooter Toshua Leavitt. Building on Leavitt’s three, the Bobcats led by as much as 12 points in the first quarter of play, holding firm to the lead throughout.
Adding to her single season record, Leavitt’s three triples move her to 90 on the season.
Despite being down double digits, Georgia Southern fought back, closing the gap to just one point. Squashing the Eagles attempted run, Texas State wasted no time rebuilding its lead ending the first quarter up by seven.
The game remained close throughout the second quarter with Texas State leading by as many as eight before ending the half up 40-34.
After giving up a jumper to the Eagles to start the half, Texas State’s lockdown defense finally reared its head and the blowout was underway.
Unable to overcome the Bobcats’ defense, Georgia Southern found itself down by 28-points heading into the fourth quarter.
With this blowout victory, the Bobcats have now won by double digits in 12 of their 13 victories and have notched up six wins by 25 or more points.
Taking the reigns for the team this week, sophomore guard Brooke Holle led the team in scoring with 26 points, adding two assists and a steal in 32 minutes on the court.
Posting a double-double was senior guard Taeler Deer. Deer contributed 13 points and 10 assists to the blowout victory.
