A local disaster declaration has been issued by Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra due to severe winter weather conditions. The declaration goes into effect immediately and is in place for seven days or until current weather conditions improve.
“In collaboration with emergency management services in the community, we determined that weather-related conditions pose a significant threat to Hays County citizens and their property,” Becerra says. “Out of an abundance amount of caution, we will take measures to ensure the highest level of response and safety. Thanks to the outpouring of support by our staff and community, we stand vigilant during this time.”
Due to severe weather conditions and road safety, Becerra has canceled the Feb. 16 Hays County Commissioners Court meeting.
On Feb. 12, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration in all 254 counties in response to severe winter weather in the state. According to Chapter 418, Subchapter E, of the Texas Health and Safety Code, the counties declaration grants authority for local agencies to coordinate under local emergency management plans. These plans and the local disaster declaration equip local resources to local governmental entities.
According to the Hays County Office of the General Counsel, the declaration will help assure Hays County qualifies for resource reimbursement if federal and state relief is disbursed in reference to this event.

Gov. Abbott and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas asks citizens to conserve power in their residences and establishments at this time.
